Type 2 Diabetes Causes

Sugar has many positive and negative aspects. Desserts taste good, this would be positive. Those of you with young children know that kids who eat a lot of sugar often then run through the house like the bulls of Pamplona. This would be less positive, possibly even construed as negative! But, beyond the trivial, sugar gets a lot of attention for being a root cause of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult onset diabetes. No more. Today it is called type 2 diabetes because children are affected as much as older adults. There is even a new double diabetes in children where they get both type 1 and type 2 diabetes at the same time. Smoking cigarettes can cause diabetes. Men who smoke run a big risk of going down with diabetes unlike men who do not smoke, because smoking is one of the causes of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes in women who smoke about 20 sticks of cigarettes per a day is about 40% higher than in none smoking women - same goes for men. Type 2 diabetes occurs in patients who are overweight and have been for some time. Usually after eating food, your body converts it into a sugar called glucose, which is used as fuel by your body after passing into the cells of your muscles, fat, brain and liver. This process requires insulin, which is produced by your pancreas when you eat. Obesity is also another high risk factor that causes diabetes. This is common in patients ages 40 and above. Due to the excess fat in the body, the muscle and tissue becomes resistant to insulin, resulting to insulin not functioning well in the body. It is also one of the mechanisms that leads to people with type 2 diabetes putting on more and more weight. When you are overweight your physiology makes it even harder for you to lose weight. And again, this is one of the reasons type 2 diabetics end up with heart disease. There is no definitive cause of diabetes type 2 but there are a number of possible causes as this disease can present itself in a person at any point during their life. One of the main theories behind the cause of type 2 diabetes is being overweight; in fact it is thought that around 80% of the people who have this disease are overweight, so this could be a contributory factor. All type 2 diabetes diets should include plenty of vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. They should also stress healthy carbohydrates such as stone cut oatmeal, brown and wild rice varieties, and whole grains. It is important when following type 2 diabetes diet plans, to avoid processed carbohydrates like white bread and rice. Processed carbs are notorious for causing spikes in blood sugar, which in turn, cause type 2 diabetes symptoms to become worse. As you may be aware, almost every type of refined sugar goes through your stomach very quickly. If you drink a lot of soda, or eat a lot of canned fruit and sugary snacks, you will almost always create an immediate overload on your system. In order to try to cope with this load, your pancreas will emit a short acting insulin. Even though it may be a difficult adjustment, following your diet is essential. If you do not follow it, you may develop problems with your eyes, nerves, kidneys and feet. Some people have had to get their toes, feet or legs amputated because of poor diabetic control. There is increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
